In the early years the Swingers would complete their sound checks at "Club 88" in Santa Monica and then mosey down the street to the San Francisco Saloon and hoist irish coffees until they were due on stage - extremely wired and ready to go. They later got better at disciplining themselves before shows. Of course all of the proceeds from that nite's show paid for the bar tab....... Gene Depiano Photography

"Club 88" was a great Westide LA club. So many great bands shuffled thru during that time. Swingers actually performed a strip tease down to their briefs to generate $ for "Jerry's Kids." After too many irish coffees from down the block at the SF Saloon, they also led their infamous "conga line" from out "88" through the Mexican Cantina next door and back to "Club 88." Patrons were cool, but were heard saying "loco Gringos."

Our buddy comedian "Ralph Kaplan" opened for "the Swingers" at the Sweetwater that raucous nite in 1982. Sweetwater owner and musical talent Jim Conroy (right) along with original Swinger singer Robert Studeny grabbed the hook. The crowd yelled "Oh Ralph" as Ralph fired off a few parting jokes....
