“ME CHERONA

AT EL GRINGITOS”

In 1981 The Marina Swingers shot a 12 minute musical sitcom at El Gringitos Bar in Marina Del Rey - entitled “Me Cherona at El Gringitos” The video was produced and directed by Cheryl, Raj and Brigette, three talented LMU Communication Arts students. Just recently the Swingers found the original edited master and had it transferred to a digital format for further editing and development. The video stars a multitude of talent that graced the stages of the Sweetwater in Redondo Beach including: the Marina Swingers, Karey Doolin (from the Karey Doolin Band), Comedian Frank Luney, Norham (The Marina Swingers), Bob Moss (from the band “Jews from the Valley”) and a host of other southbay locals that volunteered. The proof sheets and slides below were shot during the production. We anticpate completion and release of the video at the end of 2022. We also guarantee a few laughs. This one is out there !!!!!!!

LIVE AT THE SWEETWATER

The Swingers are completing the production of a live recording of a classic 50 minute concert at the Sweetwater in November of 1982 prior to their official closing. Recording engineer and LMU Grad, Dave Cantu, recorded the entire show on 10 tracts in a mobil recording studio out in the parking lot. Two of the 10 microphones were placed in the back of the club to capture the overly enthusiastic comments and response from the audience. The jokes, comedy routines and audience heckling give the impression the Swingers and their audience were at one during this unique musical performance. It was raucous and wild……

“Ola Intro”

Swingers entered stage right in their “SS Swinger” yacht to Martin Denny’s “I’m in the mood for love” - the audience was already fired up….

 

“Admiralty Way”

A short instrumental featuring Norham’s Gene Krupa drum fills and Esteban’s brilliant solos’s.

“Casual”

The Swingers performed their new arrangement of the classic “Casual” - and the show took off.

 

Give Me a Break”

The Swingers tore through the first half of this Swinger standard, took a breath and then began the build up of the intense instrumental section that ended with Esteban’s mesmerizing and exhilarating solo. The Swingers were on their game.

“I’m a Swinger”

A little difficult to duplicate the arrangement of the LAX single, but everyone used every limb available to play the various parts

 

“Casualfornia”

The Swingers performed this three verse poem from various spots in the club. Eddie recited one verse on stage, Jocko Paul and Esteban popped up over a wall for the second verse and Eddie recited verse three will walking down the bar top. Things got crazy that nite.

“Monologue”

Eddie performed his monologue over the Swingers background music. The audience by now slightly inebriated fired responses to every Eddie joke……

 

“As Time Goes By”

Jocko sang this cover in vaudeville fashion, performing a strip tease while standing on the edge of the stage. The audience was thoroughly engaged in his antics heckling, cheering, applauding during the entire performance. Jocko also sang the song beautifully. Crowd went nuts….
